Marketers Committing Business Suicide by Ignoring 50+ Consumers, Expert Asserts
Boomers and their parents are over 110 million strong. With more than 2 trillion dollars in spending power, they are 47 times richer than their younger counterparts, and account for 55% of discretionary income in the United States. Yet, the vast majority of marketing dollars are spent on adults 35 and younger. In the United Kingdom, for example, a recent survey found that fully 95% of marketing dollars went to this younger age group. "That's business suicide," says Colin Milner, a leading authority on the 50+ market and CEO of the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), a professional association that leads, connects and defines the active-aging industry.
"The 50+ consumer is virtually invisible to marketers," states Milner. "And, when marketers do focus on this group, 75% of them get a failing grade. Older consumers say that marketing targeted to them is patronizing and stereotypical. Simply put, it fails to reflect their stage of life."
What can marketers do? Milner offers five tips:
1. Take the time to fully understand this group's needs, dreams, desires, expectations and capabilities.
2. Commit to the market by ensuring your products, services, staff, philosophies and procedures are in line with what this group is seeking.
3. Be visible in the places that older adults frequent for their information--television, newspapers, Facebook, to name a few.
4. Become an advocate for older consumers. Since 95% of marketers are not focusing on this group, those who do will reap significant rewards. The Dove Real Beauty campaign is a prime example.
5. Avoid graywashing.* "Don't mislead consumers by promoting useless and expensive 'anti-aging' products or stating that a product or service is geared to 'seniors' if it really isn't," Milner says.
What will be the impact of making such changes? "A Nielsen study done a couple of years ago showed that, by ignoring Boomers, marketers could miss roughly $ 230 million in sales of consumer packaged goods alone, or around 55% of the overall sales in the United States," Milner says. "However, the opposite is also true. Those who focus on this group in a meaningful way stand to gain their fair share of the older consumer's business.
"The opportunity is unprecedented," Milner stresses. "How marketers and businesses respond may very well dictate their future." In May 2011, ICAA launched a groundbreaking initiative to help. Created to encourage more positive, realistic views of aging and shift societys perceptions of aging, ICAAs Changing the Way We Age
Best Small Business Website of 2006 to be named by Web Marketing Association
The Web Marketing Association announces the call for entries for its 10th annual international WebAward Competition at http://www.2006webaward.org. The WebAwards is the standards-defining competition that sets industry benchmarks based on the seven criteria of a successful Web site.
The small business market represents an important category in the WebAward competition, and the Web Marketing Association will again be honoring the Best Small Business Web site of 2006. The deadline for entry is May 31, 2006.
The small business market is very competitive when it comes to Web development and companies can benefit from the independent evaluation of their online efforts that the award judges provide, said William Rice, President of the Web Marketing Association. Small business Web sites have under performed the overall ISAR Index in two of the three years they have been included in the WebAwards. They and have been above average in content, interactivity, and copywriting. They have faired less well in innovation and use of technology. Small businesses that were once served only local customers can now have orders placed from countries all over the world. Even when a small business has only local customers, their Web site is often one of the best ways to introduce the business to potential new customers.
Each year the Web Marketing Association names the Best Small Business Website based on the scores submitted by the competition judges. Recent winners of the Best Small Business Web site WebAwards include:
2005 Nike Basketball - http://awards.web.rga.com/2005/bball.html
2004 RBK Sound and Rhythm http://www.reebok.com/x/us/rbk/features/alleyes/
2003 Prince Tennis Website http://www.princetennis.com/
2002 - CBS SportsLine.com - http://cbs.sportsline.com/
A complete list of past winners and the entry form for companies who wish to compete for 2006 honors can be found at http://smallbiz.webaward.org.
Web sites are judged on seven criteria including design, innovation, content, technology, interactivity, copy writing and ease of use and receive a numeric score. Each WebAward entry is judged against other entries in its industry category and then against an overall standard of excellence. Entrants also benefit from receiving valuable feedback from the WebAwards professional judging panel on their Web site development efforts.
Using the quantifiable data collected from 9,748 Web site evaluations over the past decade, the WebAwards has defined and recognized industry-specific benchmarks for successful Web sites in each of the seven judging criteria and released an Internet Standards Assessment Report to detail the findings of the study.
Participants in the 2006 WebAwards small business category will receive their scores in each of the seven criteria compared to the average of the entire industry. That type of feedback and benchmarking alone in worth the price of admission, said Rice.
A copy of the Internet Standards Assessment Report, including details regarding the small business market through 2005, is available at http://www.webawards2006.org.
Judging for the 2006 WebAwards will take place in June through August, with winners announced in September. Judges will consist of a select group of Internet marketing professionals who have direct experience designing and managing Web sites with an in-depth understanding of the current state-of-the-art in Web site development and technology. Mark Kingdon, CEO of Organic, Inc. (http://www.organic.com) has been selected to lead the judging panel this year. Past judges have included top executives from leading organizations such as Ogilvy Interactive, Saatchi & Saatchi, Blattner Brunner, Comedy Central, Sun Microsystems, Refinery, Euro RSCG, EPB Interactive, New York Post Interactive, The Cincinnati Enquirer, J. Walter Thompson, Xerox, Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Modem Media, and Answerthink just to name a few.

CaseCruzer's New Pelican Laptop Case Turn Business Air Travel Warriors Into Easy Riders
The NiteCruzer 1510 laptop case introduces the latest addition to a comprehensive line of carry-on luggage by Pelican Cases. Business nomads with an eye for trailblazing amenities are chucking dual shoulder bags in favor of the new suave and sleek NiteCruzer - the toughest airline-legal carry-on baggage available today. This innovative spin on air travel marks the end of those days when technology and personal belongings required separate but equal spaces.
The mobile NiteCruzer 1510 is yet another progressive CaseCruzer design. This cutting edge laptop case with its spacious interior gives globetrotters ample storage for personal belongings. Yet it also pampers laptops with a protective lid compartment that is ideal for the Apple MacBook Pro 13.3-, 15-inch or the new MacBook Pro Air.
Arrivals and departures are always smooth with NiteCruzer's deluxe 17-inch retractable extension handle, which allows world-class voyagers to roll in and out of any hemisphere with ease. And since the new NiteCruzer1510 is equipped with side and front handles, assistance won't be necessary when hoisting it into an overhead bin.
Fortune-hunters who travel with laptop cases - and who doesn't? - can easily survive the onslaught of tiresome travel conditions because NiteCruzer is a veritable fortress on wheels. The metal reinforced padlock protectors add strength and extra security against cutting, theft and air turbulence. And if travel plans demand that you tolerate stormy weather or seasonal downpours, the waterproof NiteCruzer by Pelican Cases with buoyancy up to 64.2 lbs is capable of rising to nearly any occasion.
Road warriors Bruce Johnson and Christine Toy Johnson of ReImagined World Entertainment have spent a lot of time on aircraft this past year. "The laptop is always critical, especially now. When we're on the road, we have to take two. One for writing, and one for design and editing needs," said Bruce Johnson. "I'll often have two different carry-ons. But I tend to try to find an all-in-one bag that will carry both my laptop and other things."
The Johnsons have encountered the full menu of travel headaches. But the most feared is when they fly into a major airport and transfer to a "puddle-jumper" aircraft to travel to remote locations. Often no bags may be carried onto these small planes. "They take your bag. And you just pray at that point," Johnson said.
No prayers needed when rolling with NiteCruzer laptop cases. Although the peerless carrying NiteCruzer by Pelican Cases weighs only 15 lbs when empty, it comes with standard features, such as water and dustproof neoprene o-ring seal, automatic purge valve with Gore-Tex
According to Mark Herlan, Social Media is About to Secure its Place as a Business Tool
Recent studies have made Mark J. Herlan, CEO of ENPOL, change how he thinks about social media. One such survey from Duke University, The CMO Survey, cmosurvey.org, shows that currently about 6% of marketing dollars are spent on social media but that number will triple over the next five years. At one time, having a strong reputation was enough to guarantee steady revenue but it is no longer that simple. A successful business can not afford to seem aloof or unreachable; it must have a public face. It needs someone that the clients feel that they can connect with and trust, which is why so many companies are embracing social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.
